Describe the symptom, not just the equipment.
- A camera is offline: note which cameras are affected and whether the issue started after a power or network change.
- Live video works but recordings are missing: record the approximate time, any recorder warnings and whether other cameras have playback.
- Remote viewing stopped: check whether authorized viewing still works on the local network and note any recent router, phone or app change.
- The image is unclear: describe whether the problem happens in daylight, at night or only when people or vehicles are moving.
Before resetting or replacing anything.
Keep footage you may need and avoid factory resets, formatting storage or deleting accounts while the issue is being assessed. A reset can remove settings or access needed for diagnosis. Never send passwords, recovery codes or private footage through a public request form.
Share the recorder and camera model numbers if available, the approximate number of devices, who owns the system and which functions still work. Configuration changes require the appropriate owner authorization and account access.
Repair, reuse or upgrade?
A recorder, camera or cable may still be useful. Compatibility, condition, available credentials, storage requirements and manufacturer support determine what can be retained. An upgrade should address the requirement that is missing, such as useful image detail, playback access or additional coverage.
Some problems involve the local network or PoE equipment; others require cable and termination work. For a new system, explore security camera installation. Equipment, testing and deliverables are agreed in the project scope.

Questions about an existing camera system.
Can you assess a system installed by someone else?
Yes. Share the equipment models, symptoms and ownership details. Reuse or configuration depends on condition, compatibility and authorized access; we do not assume every existing system can be repaired.
Do all the cameras need replacing?
Not necessarily. The camera, cable, power source, recorder and network should be considered together. The agreed scope identifies what can be reused and what needs attention.
Can lost recordings always be recovered?
No. Recovery is not guaranteed and depends on whether the footage was recorded, retained and remains accessible. Avoid formatting or overwriting storage that may contain footage you need.
